What is Splint Therapy?
TMJ splint therapy can be an effective treatment for TMJ disorders. A splint is a device that is worn over the teeth to help protect the joint and minimize movement. Splints can be custom-made or over-the-counter.
Your doctor may recommend splint therapy if you have been diagnosed with a TMJ disorder and other treatments, such as pain medication or bite adjustment, have not been successful.
The goal of splint therapy is to reduce stress on the TMJ and allow the joint to heal. In some cases, splint therapy may be recommended for long-term use.
Splint therapy usually involves wearing a splint for several weeks or months. During this time, you may need to see your doctor for regular checkups to ensure that the splint is fitting properly and that your TMJ disorder is improving.
If you are considering splint therapy for treatment of a TMJ disorder, talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits. Splint therapy is generally safe, but there are a few potential risks, such as irritation of the gums or teeth.
